Being a bit of a history buff, I was totally enthralled with the Centennial Fair and all that it encompassed. ![]() The scenes flow into one another seamlessly and the descriptive words that she used invoked quite sharp and vivid pictures in my mind! I've read almost all of Kephart's work and believe that she is a pure word poet.

![]() ![]() There may not be a more complete work of Science Fiction. ![]() Bradbury was a master of mood and emotion, showing in brief beautiful perfection of this fable. So other work of Fantasy hits me a powerfully as Bradbury’s story of a mermaid that washes ashore and changes the lives of a few young men. “The Shoreline at Sunset” by Ray Bradbury. There is, however, a weird focus by editor Judith Merril on calling out Kingsley Amis for his criticism of science fiction in an article. It is one of the best “Best of the Year” volumes I’ve come across. They are very short essays that might have been interesting at the time, but are forgettable today. Even the average stories in this book aren’t that average. This is an exceptional anthology which contains arguably the greatest Science Fiction short story and the greatest Fantasy story ever written … in the same collection! There are five great stories here and 12 good stories that range from entertaining diversions to seriously interesting. Honor begins with a newspaper clipping: a woman and her husband have been burned alive for their interfaith marriage. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() At this point, any new plot point would be welcome.Ģ021 was a bold year to include a fantasy plague plot, and the less-than-subtle lines about vaccine distribution and spreading of the virus along with the fantastical racism of "mutants caused the plague" really took me out of the story because it could not be more obvious what year this was written. Where have we seen this plot before? Right, in the first 11(?) books of this series. The big bad is an adult scientist who tries to be trustworthy but ultimately wants to use mutants for their own gain. That being said, trying to compare this to the original premise of the series is exactly why it only deserves two stars at absolute most, and that's also due to the fact that it was slightly more bearable than its previous book. The ridiculous plot of rival gangs, lizard people in the woods, and a post-apocalyptic plague felt very Final Warning-MAX-FANG era of the original Maximum Ride books, which is to say it wasn't very original or compelling character wise, but more of an action packed sideshow attraction of strange events that only make sense because the entire basis of this series is, "yeah, these kids are mutants, roll with it". Well it was better than whatever Hawk was trying to do. ![]() ![]() ![]() My feelings toward Helen of Troy were mixed. It’s a method for rapid skill aquisition through practicing in a certain way. ![]() ![]() ![]() Most of the story follows Miri and the other village girls as they deal with a harsh, cold head mistress of the academy, and the competition between them to be the head of the class (which earns you the best dress at the princess ball, plus some other perks). The king's ministers, appalled that their prince needs to marry a rough and unsophisticated village girl, set up an academy, a day's hike down the mountain from the village, and force all the marriageable teenage girls in the village to go live there and be intensely tutored for a year, at which point the prince will arrive in great pomp, there will be a formal dance, and he'll choose his bride. One day the simple life ends: the priests of their country have mystically divined that the prince is to marry a girl from their village. It's a sometimes harsh life, with everyone kind of scraping to get by, but filled with love and close friendships. Miri is a teenage girl living in a small, simple mountain village, where everyone makes a living quarrying a lovely marble rock that is found only on their mountain. ![]() The Princess Academy is a favorite comfort read, and a delightful older middle grade/younger YA fantasy, nominated for the 2006 Newbery Award. ![]() |
