At this point, any new plot point would be welcome.Ģ021 was a bold year to include a fantasy plague plot, and the less-than-subtle lines about vaccine distribution and spreading of the virus along with the fantastical racism of "mutants caused the plague" really took me out of the story because it could not be more obvious what year this was written. Where have we seen this plot before? Right, in the first 11(?) books of this series. The big bad is an adult scientist who tries to be trustworthy but ultimately wants to use mutants for their own gain. That being said, trying to compare this to the original premise of the series is exactly why it only deserves two stars at absolute most, and that's also due to the fact that it was slightly more bearable than its previous book. The ridiculous plot of rival gangs, lizard people in the woods, and a post-apocalyptic plague felt very Final Warning-MAX-FANG era of the original Maximum Ride books, which is to say it wasn't very original or compelling character wise, but more of an action packed sideshow attraction of strange events that only make sense because the entire basis of this series is, "yeah, these kids are mutants, roll with it". Well it was better than whatever Hawk was trying to do.
